Electric vehicle OHSE policy and procedure essentials

VACC’s OHSE Unit has developed an EV Safety Pack for the automotive industry.
Electric vehicles (EVs) introduce significant hazards into the workplace, as voltages present in EVs are significantly higher than those used in other vehicles and battery systems may contain chemicals that can be harmful if released. EVs also store significant amounts of energy that can give rise to an explosion if not dealt with correctly.
Businesses that provide service, repair, maintenance and/or roadside assistance to EVs must therefore take the necessary steps to ensure they do so safely. VACC members should note the following key points:
- Because EV work (depowering and reinitialising) is ‘high risk’, limit access to only experienced and qualified staff
- An employee requiring direct supervision (e.g. an apprentice) is not appropriate for this role
- A designated work area, specific safety equipment and signage is required for all EV work
- All companies conducting on EV work must have appropriate OHS policies and procedures in place, specific to working safely on electric vehicles.
The EV Safety Pack includes:
- An electric vehicle policy
- A descriptive Electric Vehicle Procedure booklet (written to AS:5732 requirements)
- An Electric Vehicle Safe Work Practice (SWP) – to be placed at the worksite as a quick reference document for technicians.
Policies and procedures are not just for purchase and filing away. Employees must be trained in the contents of any safety policies and procedures and have that training documented.
