Roadworthy safety inspections

Unlike most other states, Tasmania does not have any requirement for vehicles to undergo roadworthiness inspections annually or on transfer of registration.

This is of concern for a number of reasons:

  • the Tasmanian vehicle fleet is the oldest in the country
  • there are a large number of vehicles with out of date LPG cylinders
  • fewer Transport Inspectors are available to conduct random vehicle inspections
  • dodgy backyard repairs could pose a serious safety concern and lead to injury or death on our roads

TACC is lobbying for a mandatory roadworthiness inspection on the transfer of ownership for vehicles over five years old. This campaign has the support of the Tasmanian Council for Social Service.
