Cool Cars

5 May 2023

Tasmania has around 380,000 motorists and 1,448 automotive businesses.

Finding labour and retaining staff are the big industry issues right now, impacting everyone.

TACC, and its Victorian counterpart VACC, are tackling the skills concern from a number of angles – including the silver screen!

The chambers have hit the road with Cool Cars with Dermott and Elise, a brand-new TV show on 7mate starring Dermott Brereton and Elise Elliott. Both self-confessed rev heads, the duo visits eight businesses across Victoria and Tasmania, sitting down with business owners and their apprentices to talk all things automotive, with a particular focus on skills and career pathways.

The businesses have been selected from different industry sectors to showcase the various opportunities available in automotive. Look out for Blackmans Bay Motors on the next episode! Owner Rob Jenkyns gives Elise a workshop tour and shares his automotive journey so far, from starting out as an auto apprentice at 17 to running the show today.

Apprentice Riley Wilson also puts down the tools and chats about his passion for automotive and hopes for his career down the track.

While I’m on the topic of careers, we’ve also launched AutoCareers, a jobs portal to thrust automotive pathways in front of young people and their influencers, along with skilled workers looking for a career change. Do you – or someone you know – want to kick-off a career in automotive?

It’s a high-tech work environment with long-term job security, there’s lots of variety, and you can get great wages and benefits. AutoCareers is the place to start. Visit: autocareers.com.au

Catch Blackmans Bay Motors on Cool Cars next Thursday 4.30pm, repeating Saturday 1.30pm on 7mate.

Words: TACC State Manager Bruce McIntosh. As featured in the Mercury on 5 May 2023.
