Rego halved for Victorian apprentices in border communities

1 March 2023

The apprentices of VACC member businesses located on Victoria’s borders can now access half-price motor vehicle registration. See if your apprentices qualify.

VACC apprentices who travel across state borders for work can now save hundreds of dollars under a reworked Andrews Labor Government Trade Apprentice Registration Discount scheme.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne recently announced a scheme expansion to give apprentices who live in Victoria but work in New South Wales and South Australia the same savings as those who live and work solely in Victoria.

Eligible VACC apprentices can apply for a 50 per cent discount on their vehicle’s registration fee and Transport Accident Charge under the scheme.

The expanded scheme will stretch Victorian apprentices’ pay packets and means those travelling across borders for work can access the same discounts regardless of whether they choose to work and study in Victoria or interstate.

According to the State Government, the scheme will benefit about 400 Victorians completing apprenticeships in NSW or South Australia.

The Andrews Government introduced the Trade Apprentice Registration Discount in 2016 to reduce costs for apprentices using their own vehicle for work purposes.

“We’re putting more money back in the pockets of Victorian apprentices so they can get the skills they need for their future careers,” Minister Horne said.
