Industry insights: VFACTS November 2022 summary

National Scene

For the month of November

  • A total of 95,080 vehicles were sold in November, an increase of 17.9 per cent or 14,441 vehicles over November last year
  • All market segments were up in November, except passenger vehicles which recorded a slight fall in sales (-0.8 per cent) for the month.

Year to date sales

  • Year to date, 993,509 new vehicle sales have been sold. This is 2.3 per cent higher than at the same period last year
  • Total sales are only 6,491 vehicles shy of the one million sales mark, and will comfortably exceed that by the end of the year.

State numbers

  • Sales were up in all states and territories in November with WA recording the highest increase (36.5 per cent) and NSW the lowest (2.5 per cent increase).

Commercial vehicles

  • Heavy commercial vehicle sales were up 18 per cent for the month
  • Year to date sales of heavy commercial vehicles are up 8.4 per cent.

Sales by vehicle category and fuel type

Battery Electric vehicles

November sales

  • 4,457 battery electric vehicles were sold in November2022
  • Just under half of all battery electric vehicle sales for the month were Tesla cars.
  • 845 BYD electric vehicles were sold in November
  • 28,328 battery electric vehicles have been sold year to date.

Plug-in-hybrids

  • 420 plug-in-hybrid electric vehicles were sold in November
  • Year to date 5,093 plug-in hybrids have been sold, up 88.8 per cent over the same time last year.

Hybrids, petrol & diesel

  • 8,529 conventional hybrid vehicles were sold in November, up by 71.2 per cent over last year
  • 74,704 hybrids have been sold year to date, up 15.6 per cent over the same period last year
  • 46,717 petrol vehicles were sold in November, up by 3.4 per cent over last year
  • 508,179 petrol vehicles have been sold year to date, down by 5.7 per cent over last year
  • 30,404 diesel vehicles were sold in November, up by 18.5 per cent over November last year
  • year to date, 333,790 diesel vehicles have been sold, up 4.2 per cent over the same period last year.

Sales results by segment and vehicle brand

  • The micro-vehicle segment was the worst performing segment for the month, with sales down 53 per cent, as well as being down 30.3 per cent year to date
  • RAM, SsangYong and Volvo had the best sales results for November, with sales growth of 79.7, 69.6 and 59.4 per cent respectively
  • Nissan had the most disappointing sales for the month (-51.1 per cent)
  • New entrant Cupra had 302 sales in November
  • Lamborghini was the best performer in the luxury/sports sales segment with 19 sales for the month, up from 10 sales in November last year.

Overall, Toyota led the market with a total of 20,107 vehicles sold. Mazda was second with 7,549, followed by Ford (7,165), Kia (6,120) and Mitsubishi (5,559).  

The Toyota Hi-Lux was the highest selling model with 5,440 sales reported, beating Ford’s Ranger which had 5,073 sales. Toyota’s Corolla was third with 3,732 followed by

The MG ZS (3,051) and Toyota Landcruiser (2,296).
