Standards Australia celebrates centenary

VACC Industry Policy Advisor John Khoury represented the Chamber at the Standards Australia (SA) centenary celebrations.

For one hundred years SA has been committed to advancing the economic and social well-being of Australia. The organisation has worked to safeguard Australians through the standards created in collaboration with industry and other stakeholders.

Initially, standardisation arose during the First World War in the context of mass production. In more recent times, SA has worked alongside business, government, emergency services, and the community to address the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. To commemorate a century of SA and highlight milestones throughout its operation, a souvenir document has been developed. Standards play an important role in industry and form part of a wider national and international infrastructure that includes measurement, calibration, testing, conformity assessment, certification, registration, and accreditation. Australia has over 9,000 standards and, while many of them are voluntary, some are referenced in Australian law and regulations.

The standards are used by industry to promote sustainable business and safe work practices while improving the quality, comfort, and safety of everyday life.

VACC is a proud partner, and nominating organisation, that sits on various automotive-related standards to ensure they are fit-for-purpose and safeguard the automotive industry.

The importance of collaboration between industry and SA is highlighted in the soon-to-be published AS 5732:2022 Electric vehicle operations – Maintenance and repair. VACC thanks Chamber divisional committees and working groups, whose insights and time were invaluable during this initiative. The standard will help shape the future of automotive service and repair as Australia transitions towards a zero-emissions vehicle fleet.
