VACC engages next gen at expo

19 May 2022

It was full steam ahead at the Accelerating Women into Automotive (AWIA) stall during the two-day The Trades Fit Expo: Young Women in Trades and Tech, which was held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

An inaugural expo hosted by the Department of Education and Training, the event showcased employment options within the trades and tech industries (including automotive!) with interactive displays set up for Years 9 and 10 students.

Leading the activity for National Careers Week, the event provided an opportunity for young women to connect with employers, key industry organisations and supporters of gender equity that are helping women step into trade and tech fields. Attendees experienced hands-on activities and technology displays, and learnt about well-paid careers in traditionally male-dominated industries.

Part of the government's $5 million Women in Trades Fund, Accelerating Women into Automotive is a venture from VACC, Women in Automotive and the Victorian Department of Education and Training that supports and inspires young women interested in the industry. During the four-week program, participants receive training at a Registered Training Provider and experience fun and varied work placements. Activities equip participants with the information and insight needed to make an informed decision about starting an automotive career, and if they decide it's a good fit, VACC facilitators will help them secure an apprenticeship and provide ongoing support.

Missed the expo? No problem – you haven't missed your opportunity to take part in the program!
