Aussie classics

Sky’s the limit

When it comes to classic cars, Australia has certainly got the goods. Our beloved Ford and Holdens are more popular and valuable than ever – and the results of a recent Lloyds Auction certainly put my money where my mouth is, so to speak.

A Yellow Glo, Ford GTHO Phase III Falcon sold for $1.3 million, breaking the world auction record for the most expensive road registerable Australian classic. Yes, it’s an eye watering amount but I can’t say I am surprised the vehicle received so much attention. To me, it is the pinnacle of Australian muscle cars. And so, when one comes up for grabs, of course it attracts enthusiasts, collectors and investors alike. It’s a lot of competition.

That’s not to say that Holden has been left out in the cold. At the same auction, a 1996 Holden HSV VS GTSR BUILD #001 – still wrapped in plastic and with only 86 kilometres on the clock – sold for $1 million. And an enthusiast forked out $750,000 for a HSV GTSR W1 four-door build #017 with 16 kilometres on the clock and finished in the original colour, XU3 Yellah.

Now, I have always loved cars but if I had known what the future held, I would have really loved them back in the day. I wonder whatever happened to my Ford Anglia?

Oh well, thank goodness for motor shows. I can’t wait to get back in front of these magnificent machines. What a treat it will be.
