Tips for new apprentices

15 December 2018

Have an interest in cars, trucks or motorcycles? Are you considering becoming an apprentice mechanic? VACC Auto Apprenticeships is the best way you can get your foot in the door as an apprentice motor mechanic, motorcycle mechanic, spray painter, panel beater and more. We connect new apprentices with qualified employers; all you need is your resume, reference and a cover letter, then visit autoapprenticeships.com.au to apply.

In the meantime, we’ve got some quick tips to consider when you’re starting out as an apprentice.

  1. When applying to local businesses, visit them in person first.

Introduce yourself to local businesses and inquire about how they recruit their apprentices. Get to know who you may be working for.

  1. Being eager will get you far.

This may sound pretty simple, but employers love apprentices who are willing and keen to learn, happy to be there and have a positive attitude. If you work hard no matter what the task, you’ll be sending a strong message to your employer that you’re serious.

  1. Don’t be afraid of asking questions.

Being an apprentice means you’re there to learn and be trained, so it’s completely fine for you to ask as many questions as you like. As an apprentice you will be given a level of responsibility, so it’s better to ask someone to show you how to do something that may seem obvious rather than risk making a mistake.

  1. Organise your time.

While studying at TAFE you’ll have set days for classes and set days for working as an apprentice. It’s vital to manage your time so that you don’t fall behind in your studies or are exhausted at work. Before you start your apprenticeship, set aside time each week for at-home study.

  1. VACC has a helpline.

Did you know that we have a helpline for our members? We can help with automotive apprenticeship advice, Job Finder services, as well as providing information on potential apprentice incentives to help cover your finances or loans.
