A trial of new safety technology is underway in several heavy vehicles used in Stage 1 of the Mickleham Road Upgrade in Melbourne’s sprawling North-West growth corridor.
Advanced artificial intelligence based smart camera technology detects road users at risk.
The MAX-SAFE technology is designed to trigger an audible and flashing light alert to a truck driver inside and outside the vehicle to help present a collision with a pedestrian or rider, especially important when conducting a left-hand turn.
The surrounding area of the construction project is heavily populated with local school students and is a major thoroughfare with up to 25,000 vehicles using the road each day.
It is anticipated the technology will be rolled out in future road projects.
