Following the Victorian State Government announcement of Stage 1 restrictions due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, VACC CEO Geoff Gwilym has written to Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews to formally request that he support and encourage the classification of the automotive industry as an essential service.
The Stage 1 shutdown measures outlined on Monday, 23 March were taken in order to limit people's attendance at social venues, and it was made clear that more restrictions are to come. As policymakers prepare for future announcements, VACC is in regular contact with the Victorian State Government – and the national body, the Motor Trades Association of Australia is doing likewise federally – calling for the entire automotive supply chain to be classified as essential.
Key services rely upon the automotive industry to keep them functional, therefore the automotive industry is an essential service itself.
