VACC Marks 106 Years: Steering Victoria's Automotive Industry into the Future

20 September 2024

Today the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC) marks a significant milestone: 106 years of serving and supporting Victoria's automotive industry.

This anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the organisation's rich history and its continued relevance in today's rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

Founded in 1918 as the Retail Motor Dealers' Association of Victoria, VACC emerged during a time of significant growth in the state's automotive sector. The foresight of founders Henry and Percy Rickards, along with Montague Simes, in uniting local businesses against international competition laid the groundwork for over a century of industry advocacy and support.

Now, 106 years later, VACC's role has never been more crucial. The automotive industry of 2024 faces unprecedented challenges and opportunities, from the rise of electric and autonomous vehicles to the increasing complexity of vehicle technology and the ongoing skills shortage. Through these changes, VACC has consistently adapted its services and advocacy efforts to meet the needs of its members.

Today's VACC is a far cry from its humble beginnings, yet it remains true to its foundational principles. The organisation now represents a diverse range of automotive sectors, including passenger vehicles, motorcycles, heavy vehicles, and farm machinery, across retail, service, repair, and manufacturing.

As we celebrate this 106-year journey, VACC continues to provide essential services to its members:

  • Navigating complex industry issues and consumer relations
  • Conducting and publishing cutting-edge automotive research
  • Representing member interests to government bodies and other stakeholders
  • Delivering timely industry communications and publications
  • Championing automotive skills development and career pathways

The automotive industry of 2024 would be barely recognisable to VACC's founders, yet the need for a strong, unified voice for the industry remains as relevant as ever. From its historic headquarters on St Kilda Road - a symbol of the industry's strength since 1958, and now at our current home in North Melbourne - VACC looks forward to the challenges and opportunities of the future.

As VACC commemorates its 106th anniversary, it reaffirms its commitment to supporting its members through the next century of automotive innovation and change.

The organisation's longevity is a testament to its ability to evolve, adapt, and consistently deliver value to its members, ensuring that Victoria's automotive industry continues to thrive in an increasingly complex and competitive global market.
