Government mandates reverse aids from 2025

3 August 2023

From November 2025 all new vehicle models sold in Australia will be required by law to have either reversing cameras or sensors fitted as standard. This includes all types of light passenger vehicles, medium and heavy goods trucks.

The new Australian Design Rule mandate aims to reduce pedestrian injuries and death from reversing vehicles by providing drivers with the best line of sight while reversing.

According to a regulation impact statement, it is estimated reversing aids would save 12 lives, prevent 340 severe and 152 minor injuries.

For new vehicles made from existing models, this life-saving technology must be installed from 1 November 2027.
