Government Expands Support Services for Struggling Small Business Owners

15 January 2025

The federal government has reinforced its commitment to supporting small business owners with the expansion of two crucial support services, addressing both mental health and financial challenges faced by entrepreneurs across Australia.

New Mental Health Programme Targets Business Owner Wellbeing

In a significant move to support the backbone of Australia's economy, the government has partnered with BeyondBlue to deliver NewAccess for Small Business Owners (NASBO), a specialised mental health coaching programme designed specifically for the unique pressures faced by small business operators.

The programme, which requires no GP referral, provides business owners with six free sessions with trained mental health coaches. These sessions, delivered via phone or video call, focus on developing practical stress management techniques and addressing the overwhelming demands of business ownership.

"The flexibility of accessing these services remotely means business owners can get support without taking valuable time away from their operations," explains the programme documentation. The confidential nature of the service also addresses the stigma often associated with seeking mental health support.

Additional Funding Bolsters Financial Support Services

Meanwhile, additional federal funding has been allocated to strengthen the Small Business Debt Helpline (SBDH), a free service supporting entrepreneurs facing financial difficulties. The not-for-profit organisation offers comprehensive assistance across various crucial areas.

Comprehensive Financial Guidance

The SBDH's services include:

  • Helping business owners understand their debt obligations
  • Accessing available grants and training opportunities
  • Evaluating business viability
  • Providing crucial support for disaster relief related to events such as bushfires and COVID-19

A key feature of the service is its practical approach to financial challenges, offering guidance on payment arrangements with the Australian Tax Office, creditors, suppliers, and service providers. The helpline also assists with navigation through bankruptcy and insolvency processes when necessary, while providing access to dispute resolution services.

Holistic Support Approach

Recognising the interconnected nature of financial and emotional wellbeing, both services emphasise their commitment to providing emotional support alongside their practical assistance. This holistic approach acknowledges the personal toll that business challenges can take on owners and operators.
