Electric Vehicle (EV) technicians have achieved a significant milestone with the introduction of a dedicated national occupation classification, marking a pivotal moment in the automotive industry's evolution towards electric mobility.
The Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC), working alongside the Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA), has successfully advocated for EV technicians to receive their own classification code (351434) under the new Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA), effective 6 December 2024.
This development comes at a crucial time for the automotive sector, with EV adoption showing remarkable growth. Statistics reveal that EV ownership in Australia has surged from 6,918 vehicles in 2021 to 192,439 as of July 2024, highlighting the pressing need for specialised technical expertise in the field.
VACC CEO Geoff Gwilym emphasised the significance of this classification for both the industry and consumers. "This new classification ensures our state's automotive businesses are properly equipped to meet growing consumer demand," Gwilym stated. "With government targets aiming for 50 per cent of new vehicles to be electric by 2030, this classification provides Victorian businesses with the framework they need to confidently invest in their EV capabilities."
The new classification represents more than just an administrative change; it formally recognises the distinct skill set required for EV servicing and maintenance, setting it apart from traditional automotive roles. This recognition is expected to facilitate clearer pathways for workforce development and training alignment within the rapidly evolving automotive sector.
The timing of this development aligns with the industry's broader transformation towards electric mobility. As workshops across the country adapt to service the growing electric vehicle fleet, this formal recognition provides a foundation for businesses to invest in their EV capabilities with greater confidence.
The classification marks the culmination of years of dedicated advocacy efforts by industry bodies, reflecting the automotive sector's commitment to keeping pace with technological advancement whilst ensuring high standards of service for motorists.
