Power to more people

31 August 2023

Victoria is promised to get an additional 214 new electric vehicle (EV) chargers installed across the state, bringing it in-line with New South Wales. As of 2022, Victoria has only 475 charging stations compared with 715 in NSW.

The rollout of the project will almost triple the current installation of 116 public EV chargers. They will be a combination of fixed and portable units. The four portable chargers are initially destined for popular holiday destinations likely to experience charging delays.

Nearly half of the chargers will be installed on streetlight poles within Melbourne’s inner suburbs, with a further 100 to be installed in businesses and homes utilising solar panels.

The public charging infrastructure also received a recent boost with Tesla expanding half of its network of 60 superchargers to rival EV brands in Australia (10 in Victoria).

As part of incoming requirements under the National Construction Code 2022 energy efficiency standards, 100 per cent of car spaces in new apartment builds need to have space for EV chargers and switchboards.

By 2030, EVs in Victoria are targeted to account for 50 per cent of passenger and light vehicle sales, rising to 100 per cent by 2045.
