EV safety training blueprint

17 August 2023

VACC’s Skills Development Centre recently trained the trainers at GoTafe’s Shepparton campus, who are now delivering EV technology training into its education program.

The Shepparton Tafe automotive workshop is one of two training facilities in Victoria to have taken delivery of a Tesla electric vehicle to cater to the surge in EV training demands.

The Tesla cars will play an important role in training mechanics, spray painters, panel beaters, operators of charging stations, and even emergency service drivers.

VACC also delivered EV training for Adica Insurance, which partners with Toyota Financial Services Australia, Toyota Motor Corporation Australia, and the Toyota Dealer Network.

Adica requested accredited training in electric vehicle safety for 19 staff across two locations. Automotive business owner, Adam Schaap hosted the first training class in Bayswater.

Training also occurred in Lalor, utilising the impressive facility at Outer Northern Trade Training Centre, and VACC acknowledges the assistance the ONTTC team provided to VACC’s Skills Development Centre.

In September, the VACC training team will roll out automotive electric vehicle training in Mildura and Swan Hill. The course in depowering and reinitialising battery electric vehicles is essential training for anyone working with these complicated and potentially dangerous machines.

Participants will learn how to safely de-power a vehicle’s high voltage rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) and separate extra low voltage (SELV) system, and to reinitialise the RESS and SELV, confirming correct vehicle operation. This course is for those working in the automotive industry, including service and repair sector workers, towing operators and EV dismantlers.
