Coronavirus: Lockdown extended, permits and curfew reintroduced

16 August 2021

Lockdown has been extended in metropolitan Melbourne until Thursday 2 September 2021 11:59pm.

Additionally, under an updated Table of Restrictions, a 9pm – 5am curfew will be introduced from 11:59pm tonight. Work permits for authorised workers will also be reinstated from Tuesday 17 August 2021 11:59pm.

Authorised workers will be required to carry permits when working, and when travelling for work. The permits will need to be certified by the employer. Whilst the new work permits are yet to be released, VACC understands that it will be similar to arrangements that were introduced in August last year. Accordingly, it is recommended members re-familiarise themselves with those arrangements.

Update 17 August 2021: The updated Workplace Directions confirm that, similar to the arrangements that were put in place in August 2020, an employer in respect to a work premises located in metropolitan Melbourne, may only permit an employee to perform work at the employer’s work premises if they have issued an Authorised Worker Permit to the employee. Employers can issue a permit if:

  •  the business is on the list of authorised providers and workers
  • the employee is working in an approved category for on-site work and
  • it is not reasonably practicable for the employee to work from home.

For more information and to access the permit template, members are encouraged to refer to a recent member bulletin.
