Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme to end

26 February 2021

The Victorian Government introduced the Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme in 2020 to relieve financial hardship faced by commercial tenants and landlords as a result of coronavirus.

The scheme, however, will officially close on 28 March 2021 and after this date, repayments will recommence.

While businesses will still be able to utilise the services of the Victorian Small Business Commission (VSBC) to assist with tenancy-related mediation/dispute resolution after the cut-off date, VSBC is advising tenants and landlords to be proactive now, in the lead up to the scheme closing.

If mediation takes place and a dispute is not resolved, the VSBC can issue a certificate stating alternative dispute resolution has been attempted but has been unsuccessful. This certificate can then be taken to court or the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).
