Flexible rego payments now a reality for Victorian motorists

The Victorian State Government’s decision to back VACC’s call for flexible vehicle registration – benefitting millions of vehicle owners – came into effect on 1 January 2018.

This is a major win for struggling motorists who are currently required to find over $800 every year for their one-off vehicle registration. Now, motorists will have the option of paying every three or six months, or remain paying annually.

Owners of all light vehicles are eligible: cars, utilities, commercial vans, motorcycles, and mobile plant, such as forklifts. At this stage, heavy vehicles and trailers are not eligible. A service fee of $2.45 will apply for each three or six-month renewal payment; 12-month registration payments are exempt from the charge.

“VACC has lobbied hard on behalf of Victorian motorists and now the Andrews Government has made flexible registration payments a reality,” said VACC Executive Director, Geoff Gwilym.

“VACC congratulates the Andrews Government on what is a meaningful benefit to millions of Victorian vehicle owners.

“VACC acknowledges its Victorian Automobile Dealer Association and Used Car Traders Division for the tremendous work it has conducted over the years on this issue.”

Previously, VACC was successful in its negotiations with the Napthine State Government in having multiple common expiry dates introduced for Licenced Motor Car Traders in 2013.

In more good news, acting Premier Jacinta Allan also announced that the Victorian State Government has invested a further $12 million to upgrade the VicRoads Registration and Licensing system.

“VACC will continue to lobby for further improvement to this system to assist industry improve new and used vehicle registration process efficiencies, as well as other innovations such as the introduction of an electronic (e-roadworthy) roadworthy system in Victoria,” said Mr Gwilym.
