Coronavirus: Costly workplace complacency

Members are reminded that even if COVID-19 restrictions begin to change, control and safety measures are still required and will be enforced by WorkSafe.

The Victorian Government has released a new COVID-19 checklist template to assist businesses in the process of returning to work. This template is also useful to members who have already returned to work, to help ensure they meet all safety requirements.                                                                 

Additionally, practical safety steps members can implement in day-to-day operations include:

• Enforcing social distancing (1.5m between people)
• Displaying the maximum number of occupants allowed in an enclosed area, using the four-square metre rule
• Introducing floor markings to guide customers on where to stand, particularly around areas where people often line-up
• Avoiding physical greetings, such as shaking hands with employees/customers
• Offering contactless service options
• Consulting with employees on personal hygiene measures, such as hand washing and covering coughs/sneezes
• Ensuring hand sanitiser access for employees/customers
• Sanitising frequently touched surfaces daily, such as tables/door handles/keyboards/car keys
• Sanitising customer vehicles pre and post service, including external handles
• Displaying safety posters as reminders to employees and customers
• Consulting regularly with employees to remind them to remain diligent when dealing with customers
• Communicating to employees the expectation to stay home if they feel unwell with any cold or flu-like symptoms.

WorkSafe Inspectors have the power to enter any workplace, at any time, without prior warning. Therefore, it is crucial that members remain vigilant and avoid complacency to protect their employees and customers – and ultimately their business.
