Coronavirus: Tasmanian stimulus package

3 April 2020

The Tasmanian Government has announced a $420 million relief package to support those affected by Coronavirus.

Premier of Tasmania, Peter Gutwein, also announced a one-off payment of $250 for individuals ($1,000 for families) working casually or on low incomes. Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card holders are eligible.

Relief is also on-hand for affected businesses.

Payroll tax relief
The Government announced the waiver of payroll tax for the last four months of the 2019/20 financial year for certain business sectors. Other businesses with payrolls of up to $5 million are able to apply to have their payroll tax waived from April to June 2020.

Energy cost relief
As of 1 April, the Tasmanian Government will provide financial relief from energy costs to small businesses and individuals. Small business customers and community service organisations will have their next quarterly energy bill waived in recognition of the ongoing impacts of COVID-19. Energy prices will also be capped for 12 months for all regulated electricity customers. Aurora Energy is implementing other measures such as payment plans, freezing debt, bill relief, and waiving fees and charges, and will not disconnect any residential or small business customers, without their agreement, during this crisis.

Register the impact COVID-19 is having on your business
Tasmanian-based members are encouraged to visit the Business Tasmania website to register the impact of COVID-10 on their business. This will enable the department to make well-informed decisions on how best to support business owners. Business Tasmania is providing advice to the Premier and Ministers’ offices based on what the business community and stakeholders are telling them – so feedback is important.

Coronavirus Frequently Asked Questions
The Tasmanian Government has issued a Frequently Asked Questions fact sheet, in order to clarify the Stages of Coronavirus restrictions. TACC members should note that 'getting your vehicle serviced or repaired' is considered essential.
