VACC's 100-year countdown has begun

20 September 2017

Today marks the centennial countdown for the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC), which turns 100 on 20 September 2018.

Founded in Bendigo on 20 September 1918 – originally as the Retail Motor Dealers’ Association of Victoria, before changing to its present name in 1920 – VACC has grown to become one of Australia’s largest and most influential employer associations.

VACC’s 2018 centennial celebrations will include a special 100-year themed VACC Industry Awards gala evening in June, and on the actual anniversary on 20 September a special Board meeting will be convened at Bendigo Town Hall. Two days later the VACC Centennial Cavalcade for historic vehicles will converge on Bendigo to be followed by a gala dinner.

“Reaching 100 uninterrupted years is rare and certainly cause for celebration; so we are very much looking forward to joining with members to acknowledge our great association’s centenary,” said VACC Executive Director, Geoff Gwilym.

“Most importantly, VACC is a forward-looking organisation that is preparing its members for the next 100 years in automotive. With fast-paced changes in technology and consumer behaviour, that future will certainly look very different to what we have now. But VACC members will be at the vanguard of this
change and will be ready and fully equipped for the future.”

With more than 5,000 members in the automotive retail, service and repair sectors of the automotive industry, VACC’s core operations include technical and training services, industrial relations, occupational health and safety and environmental advice, and government lobbying via member-led divisional committees.

VACC represents all sectors of the automotive industry from new and used vehicle dealers (car, commercial, truck and motorcycle), body repair, towing operations, dismantling and recycling, tyre dealers, vehicle rentals, service station and convenience store operators, glaziers, mechanical repair, auto electrical, radiator repair, engine reconditioners, farm and industrial machinery dealers, and manufacturing in the commercial vehicle and advanced product industries.

Today, VACC’s activities have grown to include A Grade Automotive Network, Women in Automotive, Skills Development Centre, VACC Auto Apprenticeships (the largest employer of automotive apprentices in the country) and incorporates the Tasmanian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (TACC), and the Federation of Advanced Product Manufacturers (FAPM).

VACC’s commercial arm operates under the OurAuto banner and provides products and services to the national automotive industry.
