VACC launches Victorian State election campaign

25 July 2018

The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) today launched its Victorian State election campaign at Parliament House, Melbourne.

In the company of politicians from the major parties, regulators and business leaders, Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Gwilym instituted VACC’s policy platform with the publication of Better Business. Better Victoria, a comprehensive manifesto outlining the key issues requiring urgent attention from the next Victorian State Government.

Better Business. Better Victoria. explains why the repair, service and retail sectors of the state’s automotive industry requires government leadership if it is to continue employing 69,000 Victorians.

Key policy positions outlined in Better Business. Better Victoria. include:

  • Addressing skills shortages in the automotive industry
  • Promoting apprenticeships to young people, parents and schools
  • Realigning Victoria’s high payroll tax with other comparable states to promote competition
  • Why industrial manslaughter should not be introduced to Victoria
  • Modernising the Duties Act 2000 to create a level playing field for Victorian vehicle dealers
  • Regulation of the Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry Code of Conduct
  • Implementing an end of life vehicle disposal program for the betterment of the environment
  • Creating a fair trading environment for all business types, and
  • Introducing electronic roadworthy certificates for Victoria’s vehicle fleet.

“If the next Victorian State Government is genuinely interested in keeping Victorians employed, and in Victorian businesses having a competitive edge, it will take these industry-developed policies seriously and act upon them,” said Mr Gwilym.

“The automotive industry is a very important employer in this state and, if it is to remain so, VACC calls upon the next Victorian State Government to work closely with industry in order to implement the policies as outlined in Better Business. Better Victoria.
